I also have had an RCX plugged in for about a year and a half with batteries inside to boot (*not* officially (...) (22 years ago, 18-Jun-02, to lugnet.robotics.rcx)

Just make sure it is turned off and change one battery at a time, so that it never loses power for more than a few seconds (maybe you also have to disconnect (...)
