1) Can I change the batteries when the RCX is plugged in without losing
programming? Is it safe to do?

2) Can I unplug the RCX (with working batteries in it) transport it then
plug it in without losing programming?

Yes and Yes *1

Do it all the time.  The 9v transformer that comes with LEGO 9V Trains is
perfect for plugging into the RCX.

I also have had an RCX plugged in for about a year and a half with batteries
inside to boot (*not* officially reccomended!!!) and it never had a problem,
even during power outages :)

*1 Any damage ensuing to anyone else's RCX by doing anything mentioned here
is solely the responsibility of those who did it and not mine--just covering
my butt from any litigation and/or hard feelings that may ensue :) I have 4
RCX's--if I blow one up (not outside the realm of possibility), oh well....

Dave!!
