Hi Zac,

Dave Baum's NQC is excellent ... not quite the capabilities of pbForth,
but *much* easier to learn.  Mark Overmars' RCX-CC makes NQC even easier
to use ... and best of all, both Dave and Mark have made their efforts
available for use free of charge!  They have undoubtedly increased the
sales of the RIS.  Downloading RCX-CC also gives you NQC.

There is a tutorial here:

Although learning VB may be useful at your work, learning NQC opens
the door to learning standard C which is *very* useful.  After resisting
learning VB for all these years I'm presently learning it along with
my 12 y.o. son ... and am finding the learning curve steeper than it
was for learning C back in the olden days.

Good luck,

Hi all.  I've been lurking in the shadows reading posts for a couple of weeks
and now have a question of my own.  I'd like to move beyond the programming
capabilities of the RIS software and am trying to decide which way to go.  I
have VERY little programming experience but I learn quickly.  I know that
pbForth is a very powerful tool but given my experience and needs at the
moment it looks to be more complex than I need so I am planning to use it as a
second step.  In the meantime I am considering NQC or VB.  I realize that VB
is limited to a Windows machine but that's not a problem at the moment and I
already have access to a full version of the software.  The bonus is that a
general knowledge of VB and its' structure could be useful at work in the
future.  However, I've noticed that NQC seems quite popular and looks fairly
easy to learn.  I know that both languages use the RIS firmware but I don't
know whether or not NQC offers more control over the code than Vb does.  I'd
prefer to learn the language that will serve me best in my robotic efforts,
even if I'll never use it anywhere else.

None of these decisions are set in stone.  I'd appreciate any and all opinions
on the matter.  Of course, I may question the motive if I get twenty responses
from Ralph Hempel that say use pbForth ;-)

Thanks,
Zac Pollock
