I would have thought that the 500 mA limit within the RCX case would prevent this, but perhaps it's marginal for some plastic piece "nearby". If the RCX is dead, (...) | One of my students accidently left a tied up gear train running for a while, i.e. In the midst of running a RCX, the case not only gets very hot, but also has a very strong plastic burning smell. | (...) Whoops, I missed that there was a third option. I concur with this, as it's both the right voltage and confirmed AC. The mA rating, BTW, is a capacity rating, so it will work for anything that draws 800mA or less. The NXT adapter is rated for (...) (17 years ago, 11-Jul-07, to lugnet.robotics.rcx)
