Terry, I'd like to have more details about your project. I wonder, wouldn't be easier if you use a PICMicro MCU? or maybe another controller family? Tell me more, maybe I can help. (...) The $-sign before symbol addresses was accidentaly removed when that bit of code was re-written to fix a different bug. It's now back. (...) Not really. I may have overstated that.
