Thanks, everyone, this is very helpful. (Thanks to Steve especially for that
very handy comparison table.)
I should have mentioned up front that I'm using a Mac, so that rules out a
couple of otherwise interesting options.
But NXC looks like a good fit for my needs, and I'm looking forward to giving it
a try.
