External motor power and expansion board combo problem?

I wish to make the small mod to allow for external power to the motor
outputs of the main board.  However, this seems to cause several potential
problems with the expansion board.

First, the motor power connector is occupied by the motor power pass-thorugh
connector of the expansion board (J6).  Fix - add an extra connector to the
expansion board?

Second - the servo power will not be dropped to the correct voltage by
D1-D5, if 9V doesn't come from the main board. Fix - use separate servo
power supply.

Third - the same dropped supply for the servo also supplies the Sonar
connector.  Therefore may not be 6V.

Fourth - the normal 9V from the main board provides the 'supply' for the
Lego inputs.  Therefore may not be correct voltage for sensors.

Anyone else had to work around this?

Does it require some track cutting and re-wiring to solve problems 3 and 4?

Duncan, You've done a good analysis of the potential impact of changing the motor supply to an external source....when you are using the Expansion Board. Undoubtedly there are several ways to accomplish what you want, but the way I did it DOES (...) (23 years ago, 31-Jan-02, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)
