My problem is in getting the transducer to "click" which would
correspond to its sending out a ping. I seem to get nothing when
I attach the two (pos and neg) leads to the "clips" on transducer.
However, it appears that I'm able to induce a clicking effect (when
testing using the sonar_display()) if i remove the neg lead and
make the connection using my hand (holding the end of the neg lead) to the
perimeter of the td.

Making the connection to the transducer by hand will very likely damage the electronics on the sonar module board. It says in the Polaroid instructions never to operate the sonar with the transducer disconnected. You should leave everything connected, then induce a ping in software only.

Also,  Are there any standard rules of thumb when connecting the burndy
wiring, caps, transducer leads in this setup? Anyone else have any
similar problems that they were able to overcome? Could my digital IC
on the ranging board be bad?

Just make sure you've observed the proper polarity on everything (flat flex cable, capacitor, power diodes, transducer, etc.).

You can get a small experimenter's PC board from Radio Shack and arrange the power diodes, the flat flex connector & resistor on it. This connects to the ranging module with the flat flex. Solder a female header strip to it, too, to simplify connecting the INIT, BINH, ECHO & power from the HB.

To connect this small diode/resistor board to the HB, use a ribbon wire with male headers on each end, cut to the appropriate sizes. Double up on the power conductors if your ribbon wire conductors are too small. Try to make this custom patch cable no longer than necessary to keep the signal noise & loss to a minimum. Best of luck!

  Polaroid setup w/ exp board...

Hello, I am trying to setup the 6500 polaroid sonar package, but am having a little difficulty. I've soldered a .1uF cap (electrolytic) into the C7 space on the ranging board, connected a 22g wire from J12 to input 7, etc., etc. My problem is in (...)
