You probably mean the Sharp GP1U5x. That one is modifiable so that it can
be read like an analog signal.

If anyone can direct me to a company in the Netherlands which sells these
parts, I would very much like to know. Thanks.

Be carefull by the way, the pin lay-out is different:

Sharp IS1U60
1: out
2: gnd
3: vcc

Siemens SFH506-36
1: gnd
2: vcc
3: out
