Has anyone figured out how to monitor the battery level on an HB1.2?

I would like to be able to use a circuit similar to the one published in the
Jones Mobile Robots book, but it connects output directly to an analog port
and is confused by the pull-up resistor.

For anyone else interested, I came across a description by Fred of a
modification to the Miniboard that describes how to cut a track on the board
to allow analog battery level monitoring.  Unfortunately, the picture is
missing from the page:

If I can figure out how to make a similar modification to the handyboard
1.2, I will post info to the list.
