Look at my serial I/O routines (Fred has them on the
HB ftp/website with the other user-contributed software),
specifically the functions in conio.c and serialio.c. I have
both float-to-ASCII and ASCII-to-float. Note that my code has
dependencies on another library of extra math functions, math.c,
which is also available.
