Note that the spec sheet for the L293D states that the package
can only dissipate 5 watts. With a voltage drop of 1.3 volts
that is 3.85 amps total through all drivers. However, since that
is the absolute maximum rating your probably looking more like
2.5A total on a heat sunk part and < 2A on one without heat
sinking. Since in the H-bridge configuration both drivers pass
the current through the motor, two motors running at 500mA
simulaneously would be near the max steady state of the chip.
(this is where the 600mA number comes from, the spec sheet
assumes a heat sink for that number) Momentarily driving a motor
at 1A is ok but driving both at 1A may toast the chip. This is
due to the fact that the silicon can heat up faster than the
thermal shutdown can react and cause the entire chip to fail.

Thanks. This helps clarify things about the motor features alot. I was looking into transistors for the first time. I was wondering if you can connect the L293D output to the base of a high current transistor. ...and the collector and emmiter in (...) (29 years ago, 29-Mar-96, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)
