The trick is to copy the mode-change/LCD code into the on-chip RAM and execute
it from there. This code must change to single-chip mode, write to
the LCD, then change back to expanded mode. When in single-chip mode, you
lose access to any external hardware like ROM/external RAM.
I'm assuming you're not using the internal ROM or EEPROM on the 6811 to run
this code currently. If you examine the interactive-C code you'll find that
they copy this routine to on-chip RAM before they ever run it.
I'm going to attempt to use this type of code myself in the coming months,
so have been studying the interactive-C code.
