James,

That's probalby my post you read.  I'm still working on hooking 'em
up.  I'm gonna use two 629's and two 18200 H-bridges.  The 629 uses
encoders simmilar to the ones in mobile robots.  The quadrature encoder has
two signals that are 90 degrees out of phase with each other.  They serve
the same purpose as single channel encoders but you can get direction in
addition to speed.  The signals kinda look like this:

       _   _   _   _
A    _| |_| |_| |_| |

     _   _   _   _
B   | |_| |_| |_| |_|

In one direction A leads B, In the other direction B leads A.

If you already have motors and drive shafts, look at
http://www.usdigital.com

or HP's site, not sure of the address.  They both sell quick assembly
encoders with a wide range options.  They're expensive though, almost $50
apeice.  I'm using motors that have encoders already built in.  Priters are
a good source for such motors.  I got mine at R&D Electronics for $22 each
for motor with encoder and gear head.  I can give you the address for R&D
if you want.

The interface to the HB is a little more complex than I expected, but it's
almost done.  I'll probably post it when I'm done

matt

I was reading through the mail archive last night and was struck by a message someone sent regarding the LM629 motor controller. It seems as though this is a really cool chip! I requested some samples and they are on the way. My question is this, I (...) (28 years ago, 16-Jan-97, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)
