| (...) I used IR phototransistors. I picked them up at a local electronics surplus. They may have been mediocre in sensitivity as they could only respond to flame a couple of feet away. | some people use fancy sensor devices, but i have found that a simple CdS photocell or a phototransistor, with some kind of shielding tube to block ambient light, works quite well for seeing the candle flame. check out the pix -- lots of robots have (...)
