I used some basic parts (relays, resistor, wire, lego bricks & connectors) give
the RCX basic switching ability.  An IN is switched between two OUTS.  The
input can be connected to either an RCX input or output, depending on if you
want to switch sensors or motors.  Two sets of ports are avaiable:

+-----+------+------+
| In1 | Out1 | Out2 |
+-----+------+------+
| In2 | Out3 | Out4 |
+-----+------+------+

In1 is switched between OPut1 and Out2.  In2 is switched between Out3 and Out4.

One RCX output port is used to control the device.

So it is possible to use 1 RCX input port and 2 outputs to control 2 sensors
and 2 motors.  Or use 2 outputs to control 4 motors.

Details are available at:

It seems it would be possible to control many more motors if some sort of a
multiplexor was constructed,
maybe the motors could use their own power supplies and use output ports as
inputs to the multiplexor.
I just joined the list so sorry if this topic has been discussed :)

Also, has anyone developed a sensor using a digital compass?

Wow! That's just the type of thing I was looking for. Where do those • little red
motors come from?

Shop at home sells them, and there is one in the Space Shuttle kit.  If • you
call around to Zany Brainy stores you might be able to find one with a • Space
Shuttle kit still on sale for $75, which is a great price for ~1300 pieces
(including two motors and a lot of gears).  Most (all?) of them will allow
you to mail order stuff over the phone.
