IMHO, Radio Shack is very hit-and-miss depending upon your location.  I also
live in the LA area and most of my experiences have been negative and often
maddening.  If you live near Burbank, there is a good store called
Electronic City that has high prices but very knowledgeable employees.
Good luck!

The store nearest me has staff that are electronics buffs themselves and
yes,
they can advise you on circuit design.

Yes, but: are they busy with electronics buffs, or joe lambda consumers
buying a walkman or a stereo ?

Can the personnel advise you about the diode you need in a particular
circuit ?

Cheers,
