You could use a 2 speed transmission on each track and use low gear for reverse.
The robot would do a 180 for applications that need more power.
I dont know how well a treaded vehicle would turn with both tracks in a
different gear.

Um, that's is a device to split the output based on the direction of the
input. Making that into an automatic transmission would be hard I would
think, as you need forward/reverse plus hi/lo, and those are orthogonal
(4 values total).
I'd be tempted to use a gravity-based system - as the motor torque
increases it lifts the motor until it engages a second drive output.
Hmm, can't see an easy way to make it shift down nicely tho.
Perhaps a semi-manual - it shifts when driven the right way with the
right load. Will have to have a play.
