Here is some help....

Based on this design, http://www.sonic.net/~rci/transmission.htm

    2424242 888
       E     E
   ===============
   []  |     |  []    TOP VIEW
   ][ 888   888 ][     <= drive shaft
   []  E     E  []

    (1)E  (2)E

       D

DRIVE SHAFT

=E][E==WWWWW==E][=>>><<<MMMMMMMMM

242424 = 24 tooth gear
888 = 8 tooth gear
| = axle
E = ½ bushing
============ = plate
[] = 1 X 4 plate
][ = 1 X 4 beam
WWWWW  = worm gear
<<< = axle connector
MMMMMM = motor
D = Drive shaft

When the motor turn in one direction, shaft (1)
has the drive in HIGH. when the motor turns in
the other direction, shaft (2) has the drive
and the 8:24 ratio puts it into LOW on the drive shaft.

To make it automatic, you use one sensor and a weighted
pendulum that moves freely

When it goes uphil, the weighted pendulum makes contact with
the sensor, this causes the motor to reverse direction and
shift the transmission to low gear. when it reaches level ground,
the pendulum swings forware, moving off the sensor, and this
causes the motor to change directions, thus shifting to HIGH.

2 speed automatic transmission challenge

Based on this design, http://www.sonic.net/~rci/transmission.htm
can you come up with a 2 speed automatic transmission.
I did.

Here are some specs:

1) When it goes up an incline, it shifts to low gear.
2) On flat and downhill, it is in HIGH gear.
3) Use the RCX, 1 motor, and 1 touch sensor.

Good luck.
Dave :-)

Um, that's is a device to split the output based on the direction of the
input. Making that into an automatic transmission would be hard I would
think, as you need forward/reverse plus hi/lo, and those are orthogonal
(4 values total).

I'd be tempted to use a gravity-based system - as the motor torque
increases it lifts the motor until it engages a second drive output.
Hmm, can't see an easy way to make it shift down nicely tho.

Perhaps a semi-manual - it shifts when driven the right way with the
right load. Will have to have a play.
