Um, that's is a device to split the output based on the direction of the
input. Making that into an automatic transmission would be hard I would
think, as you need forward/reverse plus hi/lo, and those are orthogonal
(4 values total).
I'd be tempted to use a gravity-based system - as the motor torque
increases it lifts the motor until it engages a second drive output.
Hmm, can't see an easy way to make it shift down nicely tho.
Perhaps a semi-manual - it shifts when driven the right way with the
right load. Will have to have a play.

| Based on this design, (URL) you come up with a 2 speed automatic transmission. I did and its really useful. Some modifications were made to the transmission but it is basically the same. Additional 1/2 bushings near the worm gear give it faster (...) (26 years ago, 23-Nov-98, to lugnet.robotics)
