Lego catalog has them.  The largest (I think it's 15x15) is (if I remember
correctly) $11.00 USD

I've visited several web sites where I've seen these large, gray studded
base plates being used as foundations for some of the immobile robot
designs.  Where do you get those?  I can't find them anywhere... <sob>

The grey base plate is set number "628 Extra large gray baseplate". I don't have one in front of me, but I believe it's 48x48 studs or something like that. 627 and 626 are smaller ones (maybe 32x32) in green and blue. They are in the Lego catalog at (...) (25 years ago, 24-Aug-99, to lugnet.robotics)

(...) The largest one I've seen for sale in the last year is a 48x48 gray baseplate for US $9.99 (at Toys R Us and The Construction Site). It's item number 628 "Extra Large Gray Baseplate" in the Shop At Home catalog (if you're using the web (...) (25 years ago, 24-Aug-99, to lugnet.robotics)
