(Sorry if this is off-topic.)
The format "<URL:http://foo.bar.com/>" is a proposed standard way to
embed URLs in normal text according to RFC 1738. If your browser does
not handle this, I'm sorry to say that it is broken, and should be
fixed.
Now, why do we need a standard for that? Well, when writing URLs in
normal text, it can be a problem for the browser to detect where the URL
starts and ends. Sometimes, one also needs to embed long URLs, which
take up more than one line in the browser window. Using the <URL:...>
notation standard, the browser is supposed to recognize the URL even
when it is wrapped over several lines. For example, <URL:http://www.
math.uio.no/~fredrigl/technic/space/> should be handled by an RFC 1738
compliant client.

| I have been using Outlook and Outlook Express quite a long time now (current version is 4.72.3110.5) and I haven't find such problems you have described. The only thing it won't regocnize is when it will start with <URL:> such as <URL:(URL). (...) (25 years ago, 16-Jul-99, to lugnet.publish, lugnet.robotics)
