I haven't seen the new "hydraulic pistons" yet myself, but I suspect that
there are just simple shock-absorber style devices. Many cars have similar
pistons to open and hold the trunk lid. So as you unlatch the canopy of the
new super car, or lift it a little bit, the spring in the piston will push
it all the way open. Hydraulics are used to slow down the movement.

| I just got my lego summer catalog a few days ago and I noticed on a bunch of the new "higher" end technic models, they sport a hydraulic pistion. While this thing appears to be neat and all that, will it do the things a pneumatic piston could not. (...) (25 years ago, 9-Jul-99, to lugnet.robotics)
