This is a great idea which works pretty well. I particularly like it
because it uses 100% genuine, unmodified Lego(TM) parts, FWIW.
The caveat is that apparently the LED bleeds over into the sensor INSIDE
THE BRICK, so this technique will not completely block out the light from
the LED. That is the advantage of Ralph Hempel's solution, cited elsewhere
in this thread.
For best results, you could combine both methods -- slide a piece of
shrink-wrap tubing over the LED inside the brick, but leaving the end of the
emitter exposed to allow the sensor to still be used in active mode. Then
use the "block with beam" method whenever you want to use the sensor in
passive mode.
With any luck, the good folks at Lego will incorporate a modification
like this into future light sensors, since not too many of us "twelve year
olds" have shrink-wrap tubing lying around our cribs.
