Removing the LED makes it work over a wider range (0 to 100), but probably
at a slight loss of low light sensitivity.  There is an analysis of the
subject in the LEGO Light sensor section on my web page:
http://www.plazaearth.com/usr/gasperi/lego.htm  Digging into the sensor is
not easy or reversable.  I would highly recomend you make a passive light
sensor using a CdS photocell you can get from RadioShack.  Information for
this is in the Homebrew section.
