Is there a Linux-compatible (or maybe Java) version of LDraw? I'd love to
start looking through some of this, but I'm afraid I'm Windows free...

Is there currently a mechanism whereby people can submit Lego design
patterns (and browse those submitted)? I don't mean completed designs,
though these are useful too, but design components, a vocabulary of Lego
design we can each use in our constructions.

Yes, there is:  The lugnet.cad.dat.ideas group collects LEGO design
components in LDraw format.  The group is archived and browseable here:

   http://www.lugnet.com/news/display.cgi?lugnet.cad.dat.ideas

Later in the year, all of the postings will be organized by topic and
interlinked with DBs, searchable & browseable by element and other factors.

There is also a group for posting full-blown complicated models, which will
later be integrated with the LUGNET sets-DB.  And there is also a group for
complex scenes or meta-models.

Here is a sitemap for the .DAT sub-hierarchy:

   http://www.lugnet.com/sitemap.cgi?/cad/dat/

These groups will also be on a very friendly basis with www.ldraw.org, which
the L-CAD group is putting together.
