I am working on a LEGO color copier machine. I've been fooling with it for a
couple of months now (not so much due to difficulty as to lack of free
time). Physically, my copier is basically an XY plotter with four
interchangable colored pens. The top of the drawing carriage has two light
sensors on it to read the original, which will someday be held above the
assembly with some sort of platen - much like a Xerox machine. I've got
color differentiation worked out, I've got a weird scheme to prevent the
copy from being flipped (left for right) as compared to the original, and
I've got most of the thing built.
Right now, my difficulties are two:
1) Without using a non-LEGO piece of glass, how can I make the platen? I
have been fooling with various clipping, clamping, and supporting
structures, but haven't yet come up with a very elegant solution for holding
the original up.
2) Is there any feasible way to make both light sensors reliably "look" at
the same spot with a purely LEGO solution? Without a prism or some
first-surface mirrors, I'm thinking it may not be possible. (I realize I can
overcome this with a sofware solution, and I may have to do so. I am looking
for a mechanical solution to try to reduce the programming overhead.)
