I don't have a Mindstorms, but I DO have problems accessing the serial port
of my PCs when they are or have been running my Pilot Sync Manager.
You can disable the item by clicking from the taskbar, or just pull it right
out of your startup menu and explicitly start it when you need it.
Once in a while, even disabling it won't free up the serial port. Use another
free serial port or get a bus mouse if you can. Most PCs have two serial ports.
With all the embedded systems testing I do, I need a lot of serial ports for
data logging, so this is a common problem for me.
