Actually, with 2 light sensors you can have an unlimited number of
stops. Use one sensor to read a black/white pattern on one side of
the track (to provide a clock signal) while the other sensor reads a
pattern on the other side of the track indicating what the current
stop is. In ASCII art:
clock signal side-> #_#_#_#_#_#_
track->================================
station number-> ##____##____
The train, arriving from left to right, would read this as station
100100 (binary) or 36. You can extend the number of bits encoded as
much as you like, subject only to the limitations of the physical
distance between stations and the bottom of your Lego(r) box.
