I think you'll be happy with simply upgrading to 1.03. You may be
ultra-conservative in wanting to back up 1.01.

I don't have a copy of 1.01 but here's what you can do to create your
own image. It will require some effort on your part.

Go to ATMEL's web site and download their SAMBA (SAM Boot Assistant)
program and install on your Windows PC. It only runs on Windows.

SAMBA has not only an image download capability, but also an image
upload. It connects to NXT via USB. So you can use it to create your own
image. Figure out the commands for image upload.

When finished, un-install the SAMBA program. Make sure the NXT is not
connected by USB before the un-install. SAMBA installs not only its
program but also a USB device driver for the NXT. IT is possible that,
if the device driver is left around, that when NXT is put into boot mode
it will recognize the Atmel driver rather than the one from NI this is
installed with the NXT-G software. So you may have to use the Windows
control panel to select which driver version you want to use.

Expect to spend a half day figuring it all out. Or simply go with the
1.03 upgrade without backup. :)

Hi Dick, (...) is SAMBA available when a LEGO firmware is flashed? If you first have to do a long reset to activate SAMBA then that will wipe the first few kilobytes of flash, so the image will be incomplete and useless. (...) I second that. (...) (18 years ago, 15-Nov-06, to lugnet.robotics)

  NXT firmware?

All, I am the brand new owner (wellll, by proxy...it's officially for a rookie FLL team which I am coaching :-) ) of an NXT. Because of my penchant for reading about and wanting to know as much about any new toy I get as possible, I have been (...) (18 years ago, 14-Nov-06, to lugnet.robotics)
