I've also been involved as a coach/mentor since FLL was introduced to our small
country. And as a matter of fact I even won the Adult Coach/Mentor Award last
year

As soon as I can get hold of one of the Mindstorms NXT, I would ask the kids to
build and program a robot and run it through last year's Ocean Odyssey challenge
to see what difference (advantage) it would make.
One of the things that doesn't seem to get mentioned, is the impact of the
equipment cost on the schools ability to send teams to the competition.
If the NXT shows a clear advantage, then schools with better funding will
displace less financially well-off schools. That is, the playing field isn't
fair (but that's life isn't it?).
Allowing both the old RCX and the new NXT in this year's FLL would prove to be
most interesting to watch.
Rather than designing the challenge so as to support both the existing and new
Mindstorms technology, I would urge the designers to simply come out with a
challenge without consideration to either technologies and let the users find
out which one fares better. This is what happens in real life.
