Have you tried one of those 'cold touch' irons yet?
http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/tools/69d3/
They only get hot when in contact with something metallic - and they
cool down within a second or so when they lose contact. It's hard
to imagine how one of those could hurt a 2yr old.
They aren't the greatest soldering irons in the world - and they are
hopeless for heavy-duty work - but for making small electronic circuits,
they work well enough.
If you get 'Make' magazine (and absolutely everyone on this list
should!) there was a good review of this gizmo - explaining it's
limitations as well as it's advantages - it was in issue 2 (if I
recall correctly).
My 2yr old is now a 14yr old - but you'd be suprised how many of
these things still matter! :-)

| (...) No, I understand that - for instance, AFOL's have had compass, IR, Ultrasound, differential light and IR sensors, etc., for quite some time now. Including the rectifier etc. hasn't seemed to be very much of a problem, in terms of size or cost, (...) (19 years ago, 26-Nov-05, to lugnet.robotics, lugnet.technic)
