Well, I've used two touch switchs for a three-side bumper, and it wouldn't be
hard to modify for a single touch sensor. Make the side sensors pivoting arms
that curve around the side - the pivot point for each is on the front side,
halfway between the middle of the front and the L or R edge. Hold these closed
against a touch sensor with a rubber band. Any impact on the sides will pull the
end of the arm away from the touch sensor (you may need another mechanical
linkage here such that *either* arm will completely free the touch sensor). For
the front bumper, make a shallow arced front bumper, secured via pivot points to
the L & R arms *outside* of their front pivot points. Any front impact will now
be mechanically transmitted to the side arms, pushing them back (and due to
where their pivot points are) away from the touch sensor again.
I used two sensors, as this allowed me (with an RCX) to sense which of the
three sides the impact was on (three states - contact on left, contact on right,
or contact on both if the front fender was pushed). Worked really well, and
saved an input.

I'm kind of annoyed with the drive systems that spybots came with too. I have three, and have built identical robots from them using the large Mindstorms wheels and a caster wheel. I call them rugbugs as they work well on the carpet. I have two of (...) (20 years ago, 12-Aug-04, to lugnet.robotics)
