I think, given where LEGO is finantially and such, the best way for lego to
continue mindstorms is to release the following:
1.a RIS 3.0 containing:
Current RCX (because there is no R&D for it)
Current IR tower and other electrics
Current software (or mabie a newer version)
plus a new constructopedia
plus a bunch of elements for robot building
2.a new "builders pack" somewhat like the Ultimate Accessory Set and
Ultimate Builder Set with extra sensors, motors, lamps and other bits.
and 3.an "accessory pack" with an assortment of gears, beams, liftarms,
wheels and other such parts. Basicly, a "whos-who" of newer more modern
techinc parts.
Such a pack would give robot builders a quick way to expand their parts
collection. Plus, those using the stuff in e.g. a school environment could
put together a set containg one RIS 3.0 and one accessory pack and let each
group have one of those to play with/use. And general techheads could buy
it to get more parts for their creations (and as a way to get all the
really usefull bits from the newer sets without getting the useless
decorative bits)
Said accessory pack could also come with an "idea book" to show different
robot sub-assemblies and such.
And also, finally, make a new set that contains:
The new software for the RIS 3.0 (if any)
The new constructopedia
and all elements in the 3.0 not in the 2.0
This would enable people to "upgrade".

| Here's an off-the-wall proposal: I wonder where Lego's financial problems would be with some hypothetical RCX 3.0 ? * Would it be in designing the hardware? * Writing new software? * Retooling costs? If it's in either of the first two, I wonder (...) (21 years ago, 14-Apr-04, to lugnet.robotics)

| I'd like to initiate some discussion about the future of the RCX (yet again:). Are there any LUGNET members with a little bit of insiders knowledge about the current efforts (or lack there of) at Lego R&D on a new RCX (RIS 3.0 perhaps). It seems (...) (21 years ago, 13-Apr-04, to lugnet.robotics)
