Bruce,

Maybe I'm nuts.  There seem to be some limitations in this RIS system....

My daughter (11) and I immediately ran into a 15-block limit in the RCX • coding
environment.  On further inspection, we find we can extend this using My
Commands, Sensor Watchers and Stack Controllers.  However, my daughter is • just
getting started and would like some room to stretch out and write a series • of
instructions.  Any ideas.

Second, I find that My Commands can't be place in other My Commands.  (You
can't call a procedure from another procedure.)

Third, you can't place a Stack Controller inside a Stack.  That is, you • can't
nest loops.

We see this on both Windows 98 and Windows NT 5.  Do we have to install • Windows
95 to see the full functionality of this programming environment?

The RCXCode programming system that comes with MindStorms is inherrently
limited in the ways you describe. That's really what this newsgroup/list is
all about; improving access to the true capabilities of the RCX hardware.
There are a number of ways to go from programming in Visual Basic, C through
to Smalltalk. You can find out about a number of available systems by
cruising around the MindStorms web ring at:

http://members.tripod.com/~ssncommunity/webrings/legoms_index.html

As far as I know most of the programming systems are text based (rather that
using a visual programming metaphore) but this shouldn't put you off since
they are significantly more useful than the RCXCode (IMHO). My suggestion
would be the Smalltalk interface at:

http://www.object-arts.com/Bower/Bot-Kit/index.html

not just because I wrote it, but also because the Smalltalk language is very
interactive and therefore so suitable for children to learn with.

Best regards

Andy Bower
