A much simpler contraption that you can build is discussed in
this LUGNET message. The
basic idea is that you place a reed switch in the railbed and it will sense
the magnetic couplers between the cars of passing trains. I have been using
this technique for a few years now and it works very reliably. Hope this
helps.
I also recently offered these sensors
for sale, but due to the complete lack of interest so far, I do not plan to
produce them in any large quantities. Once my existing stock is depleted,
youll have to build your own.

Thanks for the links. I would really like to use such a sensor, but Im a LEGO
purist. Maybe thats irrational, but it pains me to see things like servo motors
and ugly exposed circuit boards attached to LEGO. Even if a device is hidden
inside LEGO bricks, I would still know its not pure, and Id feel dirty for
using it. Sigh.
There are many things on the LEGO train fans wish lists, and a reed sensor is
definitely one to add. Actually, that kind of sensor could be useful in
robotics, too, if youre using magnets. There are quite a lot of sensor types
people wish LEGO would make.
