I have been using this technique for a few years now and it works very reliably. Hope this helps.

I also recently offered these sensors for sale, but due to the complete lack of interest so far, I do not plan to produce them in any large quantities. Once my existing stock is depleted, you’ll have to build your own.

Thanks for the links. I would really like to use such a sensor, but I’m a LEGO purist. Maybe that’s irrational, but it pains me to see things like servo motors and ugly exposed circuit boards attached to LEGO. Even if a device is hidden inside LEGO bricks, I would still know it’s not pure, and I’d feel dirty for using it. Sigh.

There are many things on the LEGO train fans’ wish lists, and a reed sensor is definitely one to add. Actually, that kind of sensor could be useful in robotics, too, if you’re using magnets. There are quite a lot of sensor types people wish LEGO would make.
