Hello,

Yesterday I bought the four NHL Hockey player sets (#3540, #3541, #3542,
#3543).  There was only enough time last night to play with one of them,
Flip Shot #3542.

The set is mostly new pieces.  New as in never seen before (at least by
me).  There is a return spring mechanism for use with an axle
(auto-centers itself).  The hockey player body is made from a new "gear
box" that looks as if it may be more useful than the Bionicle bodies.
New pieces for the feet look like just the thing for building little
'mechs!  And, there is also one rubber grommet lift arm that is 1x2 in
size with cross axle holes--could definitely be used as dampers in a
device that shakes or vibrates (compressors?).  And more!

Overall, I'd say that the set is a very good addition to the stock bins
for under $8.  It may be low in overall piece count, but the few pieces
that are "standard" are almost all useful Technic pieces.  I'm looking
forward to opening the other 3 sets tonight!

Anyone planning MHL (Mindstorms Hockey League) events yet?

For those interested, I dug into the other 3 sets tonight.  Disregarding colors,
here is what I found:

* 3541 and 3542 come with identical shoulderpads.  3540 and 3543 each have their
own type of shoulder pads (which are different from 3541/3542).

* Each set has a different hockey stick.  The sticks in sets 3541 and 3543 have
two technic pins molded in.  Both 3540 and 3542 have sticks have an axel
sticking out.

* 3542's blade is curved/cupped towards the ice for flipping the puck.  All the
rest have sticks with straight blades.

* 3541 and 3543 have identical instruction steps.  3540 and 3542 also duplicate
each other.  This is because of how the sticks are mounted.

Everything else is the same (except for colors).  I'm not sure what to call some
of these pieces, because I've never seen them before, but here is what I find
interesting:

* 1 hockey player body

* 1 1x2 Rubber liftarm (width of a technic bushing)

* 2 1x2 liftarms

* 1 centering spring return

* 1 long switch piece

* 1 short switch piece

* 2 feet

Everything else appears to be typical Bionicle or basic Technic/LEGO parts.  If
there is interest, I could find time to scan in some pieces.

The players come in a sports bottle container that doesn't have any holes or
stud.  It takes a lot of force to pull the spout up.  A child using their teeth
to open it may lose some.

To play, you hit the hockey player on the head to slap the puck.  (I think the
idea was to push them on the head, but they aren't that free-moving).  Playing
requires a hard surface for the puck to "glide" on, such as a table top.

From a parental point of view, I could see my own kids being interested for the
"slam" and "game" aspect of things (like air hockey).  But, I can also envision
them getting in trouble within minutes for getting out of hand and
allowing/making pucks ricochet all over the room.
