We're not talking about hovercraft here at -all-. We -are- talking about
the assertion that 'mass is equivalent to weight on the planet Earth'. It
isn't, ever. A vector is -never- equivalent to a scalar, basic
dimensional analysis; basic physics.

Your engaging in a logical strawman using an ad hominim to intimidate
(three different logical fallacies) isn't helpfull at all. That you don't
see the importance of the distinction is of no interest to me. If you
don't want help, so be it.

Q: If mass and weight are equal why does it take so much to get the hover
off the ground, but so little to move it horizontally? It's not pedantic
at all. Lifting the hover is working -against- gravity, moving the hover
laterally is independent of gravity outside of frictional issues (which
the air bearing the skirt provides is minimal). It's understanding the
subtleties of nature and working -with- them to build a working device.

I can suggest for those with interest in logical fallacies a good
reference. Appendix A (pp 275) covers all 26 types of logical fallacies
and how to spot them.

(...) And if we were talking about a hovercraft in an elevator - I'd be agreeing with you. Dumb pedantry doesn't work here. The **WEIGHT** of the hovercraft is just as important/relevent/applicable as the **MASS** of the hovercraft when we are (...) (22 years ago, 30-Nov-02, to lugnet.robotics)
