I'm constructing an oval track on a 4X8 sheet of plywood with a different
grey tone for the inside and outside of the track. I will experiment with
tones and thickness. There will be a "barcode" to indicate upcomming
corners, this will act as a brakemarker of sorts this will be made up of a
third grey tone. I'm using paint instead of printed paper for durability
and the cost of printer cartridges . I could go larger but because of my
location ( or Isolation) I would encourage others to create an identical
track so that we could compare lap times. as far as calibrating light
sensors for different tracks, that could be made variable in the software
(but then you would have to calibrate it before each race)
This track should be able to work with a single light sensor. One of my
concerns is if the light sensor will be able to identify the color of the
ground when passing over it at high speeds
The start/finish line will use a black line or a overhang that anttenae
linked to a touch sensor could hit ( as suggested by a prev. post) I would
like the RCX to time each lap and adjust his acceleration/braking
accordingly. A signal from a RCX or the IR port will signal the start of
the race. I would like to log the laptimes on a database
Another poster made a good suggesstion about accident avoidance by using a
taillight and a light sensor on the hood.

If you print the racetrack on A4 sheets you could rearrange them like a
jigsaw puzzle. Each sheet is a "Straight" or a "chicane" or a "90deg left"
or whatever. Before a race, the only thing the competitors know is that the
track will be constructed from a maximum of (say) 30 sheets.
Perhaps A4 is too small as a "unit" - two A4 sheets together would be
better. The pattern should be crosshatched rather than grey-scale so it's
more consistently reproduced on inkjet printers. And the sheets could be
downloaded off the web so anyone can set up their own track.
How about a "barcode" for the finish line or to signal an approach to a
bend? How about a Manhattan grid of streets with a barcode at the approach
to each junction telling the robot which way to turn?
