I've also followed this intresting thread.
And now I'm wondering why Lego have used the infrared transmission system at
all?
Is it cheaper? When using RF you can easy put in a crystal to set the
frequency, and then it is easy when you have many robots competing in one
arena.
Here in my hometown they had a contest in the university with "sheep-dog"
robots, the object was to find the sheep and bring it to the robots
homeplace. All robots got their possition and direction, plus the sheeps
possition through a "gps" system made of an icon on each robot and the
"sheep"-robot. A camera over the arena connected to a computer with image
software, collected the possition and then sendt the data through LAN and
through the IR-tower.
By doing this there was TOO much IR-traffic in the arena, and some of the
robots got confused sometime and got wrong possition from the tower. Since
all robots send in the same IR frequency they will interupt each other with
their traffic. With diffrent RF frequency this could easy be avoided.

So why has not Lego already made this with RF instead of todays IR ?
Has anyone found a way to implement this RF unit into the RCX? Or has it to
be outside the RCX casing? (have never opened my RCX to see how much room
there are inside...)

| (...) I guess that's because of regulatory issues. Getting anything with radio transmission approved for all countries Lego wants to sell in can prove a daunting task... And IR can prove very effective: did you try Spybotics remote control? it (...) (22 years ago, 23-Oct-02, to lugnet.robotics)
