I worked on a similar project about a year ago. I needed to put a small
mark on the inside the a CD ring at a certain spot (or pretty near). I had
to do this to 4000 CD's. I don't have access to the odd air cylinders, so I
had to make do with other stuff.
I used 2 suction cups I found at the dollar store. They were small and very
"sticky". A simple "U" arm picked up the CD's just fine. The problem was
dropping them. I first drilled a hole in the top of the suction cups just
big enough to get one of the Lego hoses in. Then when I wanted to let go, I
just flipped the value on my compressor and shot some air into the suction
cup to get it to let go. I ran into problems of the whole thing not sealing
well though.
I ended up using a mechanical solution. I attacked a small rod to the edge
of the suction cups. Then I just pulled the rods back lifting the edge of
the suction cup up and letting go.
It worked overall, quite well. I wish I'd taken photos of it. Sorry.
Hope this all helped.
peace

| Maybe you could motorize some of the old style pneumatics to create a suction grabber. You would need one of the old style cylinders and the pneumatic diode brick: (URL) only non-Lego part would be the suction cup itself. Check out these excellent (...)
