I think the remote controller is an absolute *must* for the serious
robotics builder - I *love* mine.
* It allows you to decouple the programming task from the
mechanical design task. While you are building, you can
check that everything is working using the remote without writing
a single line of code - and then switch to programming a "known to
work" robot - rather than fighting your program bugs at the same
time as worrying why something jams somewhere...or whatever.
* When your robot is immenently about to run off the edge of the table,
and return itself to the natural state of Lego parts - a pile of bricks -
it's *REALLY* useful to have the 'emergency stop' button on the Remote!
Arguably, it's a pain to have it in a big set though because you'll never
need more than one of them - but you might well want many of those big sets
for the parts they have.
