I'm just back from SigGraph (I missed the posts from other AFOL's who were there).

There were some very interesting robots in the 'Emerging Technologies' area.

They were modular robots that could rebuild/reconfigure themselves in order
to perform a specific task.  This seems like a very interesting idea to
pursue - and perhaps not impossible with Mindstorms technologies.

The most promising system consisted of two sub-robot 'parts' called 'male' and
'female'.  Each sub-robot (for want of a better name) comprised two cubes connected
by an L-shaped beam. In plan view, they looked like this:

      +-----+
      |     |---
      |     |-- \
      +-----+  \ \
                | |
              +-----+
              |     |
              |     |
              +-----+

The connection between the beam and the two cubes was motorized so that each cube
could rotate it's connection to the beam.

Then, on the 5 faces of each cube that's *not* connected to the beam, there is a
protuding knob on the 'male' robot - and a motorized gripper that can grab and hold
that knob on the faces of the 'female' sub-robot's cubes.  This permits chains and
towers of sub-robots to be built up that can move (slowly) by driving their L-shaped
beam connections - and which can connect and disconnect on-the-fly using the knob-and-gripper
arrangement.

It would be nice to be at siggraph - However - I am livning so far away and a ticket up there is so expsensive. It would be good with a robot agent.. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris 'Xenon' Hanson" <xenon@3dnature.com> To: (...) (22 years ago, 21-Jul-02, to lugnet.robotics)
