Shame on me. I should have read the thread more carefully - my bad.

I've been playing with the Cadmium Sulfide photoresistors that Radio Shack
sells and they make pretty good RCX Light sensors.  CdS is more sensitive • to
the visible spectrum than the silicon photodetector in the LEGO Light
sensor.  I think it can also read lower light levels than the LEGO sensor
because it doesn't have the LED spill over problem.  Anyway I put more
information about this on my sensors site at:

to the TOC entry Home Brew Sensors.

Surely impact is too late as an avoidance sensor, and why all round?
Most animals content themselves with forward detection, either by feel
using antenna or by some sort EM radiation. I've just started building
an analogue type sensor using 2 photo transistors. By oscilating them
towards then away from each other I hope to be able to pick up the point
of max reflection from a surface. The position, in rotation, the sensors
are at should be proportional to the distance from the surface. The
bench model appears to work with a light reflected from a wall, the only
problem I think is that I might have to provide a central light source.
The other approach would be with a pair of IR sensors, but this would
probably suffer from the save problem. I'll let you know if it works on
a model.

Does somebody know an industrial reference for a CdS photoresistor? There are places where the Radio Shack reference is not valid. Thanks, David (26 years ago, 22-Dec-98, to lugnet.robotics)
