I disagree about this.

--Most animals content themselves with forward detection, either by feel

Have you ever grabbed a cat by the tail when it couldn't see you? Trust me,
they detect that, and if they don't know you, you might pull back a stub.

Or better yet, try backing an animal into a corner - which is rather
difficult to do most of the time - and you will find that as soon as any
part of their body touches the wall or another animal, they know it and
alter their course accordingly.

Most animals detect collisions _all_over_ their bodies, but nearly all have
specialised detectors that center on the 'head' and are especially useful
for forward motion.

I think this is what you were going for, but I don't think your scope was
large enough to encompass all the possible needs for 360 degree detection,
which should actually be greater than 360 when you add the other possible
axes.

That's just my opinion, I may be wrong.
