What kind of programming do you do with the RCX?

Hi there, I recently picked up a 9748 DDK.  I think it is a pretty fun set,
for the limited amount of things that it does.  I was wondering if someone
who knows more about the Mindstorms stuff can answer a few questions for me.
What are the expansion sets for?  Do they work with 9748?  Or is 9748 a
'stand alone' type set?  What is RCX and what does it do?  Thanks.

The expansion sets are meant to work with the Robotics Invention System
(RIS), and to a (much) lesser extent the Robotics Discovery System (RDS).
They don't integrate well with systems based on the micro-scout.

The RCX is a big lego brick that has a CPU which you program from your PC or
Mac.  It has three input ports for attaching sensors (touch, light,
rotation, temperature, etc...) and three output ports for driving motors.
It also has an infrared (IR) sensor and transmitter that can be used to
communicate with other RCX's, scouts (a limited RCX like thing that comes
with the RDS), or with your computer through the IR tower (which attaches to
your computer through a serial port, or more recently a USB port).  I think
it can even communicate with the micro-scout to a limited degree.

Using software on your PC, you write programs that run on the RCX brick.
These are downloaded to the brick using the IR tower.  This allows you to
create robots/machines that behave in the way you want them too.  Today the
RCX can be the heart of an RC car, tomarrow a line following robot, or a
slot machine, or a tic-tac-toe playing robot, or a .....  The possibilites
are limitless.

Any kind you want, there are a myriad of available languages to use with it, whether its the out of the box lego, paint by number language ;) , or the down and dirty full C/C++ legos language, and many others in between, forth, python, java, to name (...)
