There are also the old (70's era) 4.5V motors.
Stepper motors are on my Mindstorms wish-list and so is a
mind-numbingly-simple-to-design-but-we'll-probably-never-see-it 9V to
4.5V motor interface so that Mindstorms can control the old, beefier,
motors (of which I have 6 to 8).
I don't know what the current drain is on the old motors, but I
suspect the RCX would whither and die if you tried to hook one up
directly.
