I find myself half agreeing here. The model is great. Is it something a parent
would buy for a ten year old these days for $120? I tend to doubt it, for many
of the reasons already discussed on this network before.

But;

I built my 8480 before its parts where absorbed. And it was a learning
experience!

A possible way for someone as talented as Jennifer to convey her skills to the
masses would be in book form. I think I can honestly say if I came across a
title on one of the online bookstores saying something like Advanced Technic
Engineering by Jennifer Clark, I'd buy it without a second thought! I tend
to think
quite of few of the more serious minded Technic enthusiasts have a large enough
inventory to be able to build examples of her delightful designs without
the need to
buy more parts.

Don't get me wrong, I never pass up an excuse to buy more parts. You simply
cannot
have too many! But its fun trying ...

Lego should make this into a set.

I dunno about that.  Didn't someone here say that he/she found the 8480
Space Shuttle too difficult to build?

Given that LEGO sets are, after all, children's toys, I think they
should comprise fairly simple mechanics and construction, so that the
child building it gains confidence that he/she can build something
similar.  They should also encourage the child to experiment with own
designs, so that they can, after a while, build even more advanced
models themselves.

In this respect, I really like the 8448 Supercar.  It has advanced but
understandable functions and design.  And the whole package encourages
the child to experiment with redesigning and rebuilding it.  This kind
of redesign/rebuild is probably the first step towards building fully
own designs.  At least that was how I started building my own technic
models as a child.

While Jennifer Clark's models appear to be extraordinary great with
respect to design and function, I fear that they would be too
complicated to grok for a child in the Technic age bracket.

  Another Technic Creation

Hi again folks, I've just put my latest creation online, a Technic figure scale small(ish) excavator. The model is powered by motors and pneumatics, and there are MPEG videos of it working to download. You can find it here: (URL) me know what you (...)
