R.G.Peel asked:

does anyone have a foolproof method of turning an RCX tracked robot 90
degrees precisely?
I've thought of motor timing, but surely that would be affected by
battery power.

Yes - that and wheel slippage and motor mis-match.

The only solution I can think of is some sort of rotation sensor
assembly?!?!?

You can buy 'official' Lego rotation sensors...but they don't come with
either RCS or RDS sets.  :-(

That doesn't solve the wheel slippage problem though.

Any solutions anybody?

Two off-the-wall ideas:

1) Turn by lowering a plate from underneath the robot onto to the
ground - pushing down on it hard enough to lift the robot off
the ground. Now rotate the robot while the plate stays still.
Hence you can use either touch sensors against blocks mounted
on the 'floor plate' - or a light sensor and some kind of optical
coding on the plate to orient the robot relative to it.
The point being that the plate can have enough friction against
the ground to eliminate slippage.  At the end of the turn,
raise the plate and drive off.

2) Have two sets of drive wheels at 90 degrees to each other.
Instead of rotating the robot, just have it drive sideways.

Yes - OK - *silly*.  I'll go take my medication now.

Or make the extending "foot" actually turn the robot and use some mechanical stops to ensure it only moves through 90 degrees. Admittedly, this would not be an elegant solution : ) (24 years ago, 16-Nov-00, to lugnet.robotics)
