Unfortunately, to do it without polling from the computer periodically
would be difficult, simply because the IR tower turns itself off
after inactivity.
However, if you happen to have one of those Mindpath remotes, the
ones that come with the IR receiver that is pre-IrDA, you can use
that receiver as a Mindstorms receiver. I'm thinking about hooking
mine up to the second serial port on my MkLinux box, and letting
it just listen for RCX messages.
I'll still have to have the IR tower connected too, the Mindpath
receiver is only a receiver.

| Hi John, I've been doing this for a while with the Cybermaster. You can simple use the SetVar and Poll commands in immediate mode via the OCX to read and set variables in the brick. Add a bit of handshaking and you have a communications mechanism (...) (26 years ago, 10-Dec-98, to lugnet.robotics)
